Years behind the events:
“Well,” said Lina, sitting down. “When do you plan to find work? I don't plan to keep a good one for nothing. You wanted to be a nurse, didn't you? Well then, find a way to practice because you're not a child anymore.”
“I'm looking for a job, but please give me some time,” Lucia begged. “ It's a little difficult since I have no experience.”
“Listen very well; it's enough to be supporting Carlitos with his career that I still have to support you. Either you look for a job as soon as possible or just get out of the house.
“Lina,” a lady spoke, “leave Lucia alone. She is trying as hard as she can, but the situation is not easy.”
“Stay out of this! This matter is with Lucia,” she said, looking at the girl. “If only you had gotten yourself a man, things would be different. Although, looking at your physique, it's hard for you to get anything good.”
The girl's hands became fists. She took a deep breath, refusing to answer her as she deserved, and ended up turning around and leaving the place. In the room, she began to cry. The same lady who had defended her came in.
“Don't listen to her,” she said, wiping away Lucia's tears. “Just speak to the weight of your tongue. You'll see that soon you'll find a job worthwhile.”
“Tomorrow I'm going for an interview, but I don't have any money. I have to see where I can get it. Oh, chaparrita, I don't know why Lina doesn't want me if I'm not a bad daughter. Or am I?”
“Of course you're not,” she wiped away her niece's tears. “Try to understand her. It's not easy being a single mother. Besides, she's upset because of what happened with Carlitos.”
The bedroom door opened, and Lina walked in. Seeing her daughter being comforted by her sister, she felt very upset. She grabbed her arm too aggressively.
“Stop crying; that won't solve anything,” she said, pushing her daughter with disgust. “Go help my mom with the chores. At least that's what you're going to do to earn what you swallow.”
“ Why do you hate me so much?” she stroked her sore arm. “I haven't done anything to you, as far as I know. But you treat me like I'm worth less than nothing.”
“ Do you really ask? Please, Lucia, don't abuse your stupidity. It pisses me off because you're such a shitty kept woman. Now go help with the chores and stop crying like a cupcake.
Lucia went to help her nanny with the chores. The old woman watched as her granddaughter dried her tears and guessed that Lina had mistreated her again. It pained her to see the situation of her beloved princess, but she could not do much, as she did not want to make things worse for her.
“Don't cry, my little wild princess,” the lady told her lovingly. “Lina loves you, just in a completely different way than other moms do. You will see how things will change for the better. You have to know, my child, that there is no dusk without a dawn, and when everything looks darker, it is because the light is going to come out.
Lucia could only smile. That day, she didn't want to eat dinner because her appetite had completely shut down. She was in her bed but pretended to be asleep as soon as she heard Lina enter the room, since she shared it with her mother. She could feel the woman make sure she was sound asleep, and then she pulled out her cell phone.
“Hi honey. She is asleep, so don't worry too much." There was a pause. “Don't be mad; I promise to send you more money next time, but please don't leave me. I know, and I am also desperate for Lucia to find a job, so I can help you more.
Lucia's heart became tiny in her chest. She stirred, but pretended very well to stay asleep. She could hear Lina giving promises of eternal love to a guy she didn't even know. Then she hung up and went to bed. She managed to sleep a few minutes later, but her daughter couldn't do the same. That's how she spent the sleepless night.
The next day, Lucia got up to go to the job interview. It was a bit far away, so she was considering hitchhiking. The moment she looked at her aunt, she said good morning in a loving way, but made sure that Lina did not see such a thing, as she would get upset.
Lucia helped her nana with the chores and then they all went to eat. While they were having breakfast, Lina brought up the subject of her daughter's unemployment again with more venom than before.
“I'm going to a job interview,” Lucia spoke with some trepidation. “Don't worry too much, although there is a small inconvenience.”
“The comb is already out,” she snorted, annoyed. “What's wrong?
“The job interview is a little far from here, so I need money to go by bus. I thought about hitchhiking, but it might be a little dangerous to do that since someone might do something to me.”
“I don't have any money to give you. Hitchhike,” she said, looking at her with contempt and mockery. “Besides, who would be interested in a grease ball like you?”
Lina's words made Carlos laugh. Lucia felt all her anger rising in a way that threatened to come out, but in the end she was able to control herself.”
“I'll go get dressed.” She got up. “Now, if you'll excuse me.”
Lucia's perspective
I went to get ready for the job interview. I took out the best clothes I had, but I could tell they were old. I couldn't ask Lina for money, as she was only going to mistreat me. The only times she is a bit affectionate with me is when I am sick, but sometimes not even for that, since she usually treats me badly before she starts to pay me some attention.
“Lucia.” They spoke from outside. “May I come in?”
“Yes, sure, come in.”
The short girl came into my room and took my hands. That's when I felt the little piece of paper that would save me from hitchhiking to the interview site.
“ Thank you” I hugged her. “You are one of the good things that have happened to me living in this house. Please don't ever leave me.
“I'm sorry for not defending you from Lina, but you know I can't do that; it would be worse.
I told her not to worry. I left for the job interview, and on the way, I was thinking about what I would say there. However, I remembered the conversation Lina had that night with that man. I wondered how far my patience for her would go.
I arrived at the interview site and was greeted by a very nice lady. She made me feel like I had never felt before, like a human being capable of being useful.
“Well,” she said, looking at my resume,“it shows that you are a recent graduate and have no experience.
“That's right,” I said, worried. “Well, I thank you for the opportunity. Sorry for wasting your time.
“Wait a minute!” she stopped me. “I haven't told you that I'm not going to hire you. Please have a seat, Lucia.”
I found the job offer in the newspaper. The pay was extremely good, but that didn't interest me. All I wanted was to be able to work to help out at home. Lina was pushing me every day for this. What struck me the most was that she didn't mention that they needed someone with experience.
“Listen,” she said, sitting down again. “I'm not one of those people looking for a century's worth of experience. I'm flexible in that respect, as I am in others. From what I could see, you are a fairly young and strong girl. However, your insecurity in answering my questions makes me a little hesitant.”
“I'm just nervous, miss,” I said apologetically. “I'm sorry if you got the wrong idea.”
“That's what I assumed; that's why I stopped you. My mom has a diagnosis of schizophrenia.“ He sighed heavily. “I'm going to tell you how it is. I don't want you to complain when the time comes. No soldier dies in a war foretold,“ she said, drinking some juice. “She is aggressive, very agile, and has superhuman strength. She also has her good side; on certain days she is calm, so don't worry.”
“¿Anything else?” I asked her,“I feel one more word coming.”
“That's right. ¿Do you take the job?”I was happy; I couldn't deny it, I could finally work, and I wouldn't have to listen to Lina's same old chatter about it anymore. I arrived home, and the moment I announced that I got the job, I was only congratulated by my nani and the chaparrita.“Aren't you going to congratulate me?” I asked Lina, “I thought you were going to be happy.”“I don't see why I should congratulate you for something that is simply your responsibility; now stop making such a fuss about a simple nursing job and let me see the social networks.”“By the way, Lina,” spoke Carlos, “I need some things for college; give me some money.”“Lucía,” spoke Lina, “give money to your brother.”“¡¿What?! Are you fucking kidding me, what are you saying? I just got a job today; I don't have money to give Carlos; besides, that's not my responsibility.”“I don't have any money either; tomorrow you can ask for an advance and give Carlitos the money he needs for his college.”I got so upset
“Only the cleaning supplies will be necessary; in the psychiatric ward, you will be put in uniform.”“Very well.”The girl Anayanci was trying to stay strong, as was young Jorge, but when they took her away, she was conscious.“Are you taking me for a walk?” She asked excitedly, “¿Where are we going?”When I heard her, I could not hold back my tears. I approached her and gave her a kiss on her white head.“I love you very much, Mrs. Amalia.”“I love you too, my child, and forgive me for what I did to you.”She hugged me, but suddenly she changed and was choking me; the boys held her tightly, and that's when young Jorge broke down.“Young man...”He hugged me tightly as his tears streamed down my neck. I reciprocated the hug, and I couldn't help but cry.“Shhh, it's going to be all right, young man.”“I don't want you to leave.”“It's the best thing for you, believe me.”Once they took her away, I saw how the girl Anayanci became worse than young Jorge, but she managed to recover.“We
I ended up being hired temporarily to take care of two girls, and I tried my best. My boss was happy with my performance, but since not everything lasts forever, I was fired because the lady's husband lost his job.“¿Were you fired again?” I've had enough of you; can't you keep a job for a year?”“Understand that it wasn't my fault. I'll call the places where I left my résumé to see if they still need staff.”“For your sake, I hope so, because I can't support you anymore.”“Don't worry, I won't give you any more trouble,” I replied, annoyed. You're supposed to be my mom, but you seem worse than an enemy. The relationship between us got worse. Lina insisted on annoying me, and since she started using social networks, she was barely present at home except when she went to work.I called everywhere I applied, but they told me they had already hired someone. To add to my misfortune, the situation at home was becoming increasingly untenable. Carlos only saw me as a checkbook and believed i
“No way,” I snatched her wallet, “that money was given to me by a very kind man; I hid it because I need some personal hygiene things, and I am not going to give it to you for your men.”I ended up taking the money out, so I kept it in my bag. Lina tried to take it out, but the moment she couldn't do it, she started to hit me repeatedly. She threw me to the floor and kicked me until she was tired.“You are the worst thing that ever happened to me,” she said. “Damn, the time I gave birth to you.”A pool of blood formed where I was. Carlos came to where I was, and the moment he looked at me, it was as if he hadn't seen anything, so he just went to his room. “¡Lucia!” shouted the chaparrita “but what happened to you, my child.”She together with my nani helped me to get up and took me to bed, Lina the moment she looked at me it was as if she had seen a garbage bag that was just waiting for the toilet train to be thrown away.“I don't want to sleep here anymore,” I said. “This place is
When Lina came to me and looked at me with a tear rolling down my cheek, her eyes rolled back in frustration."What happened? Go inside, if you don't want to be next to my nani I will go.""My mom is going to be transferred to intensive care, they are already going to do it. I really didn't want to stay here, but I have no other choice, since you don't have the authority to make decisions, nor are you good at it."I didn't want to say anything to her because it wasn't the time or place to discuss. After a few minutes, they took her out to take her to that place, she was with her eyes closed and I was moving my eyelashes so as not to cry.The rules forbid us to be there, so we stayed in the hallway with other people who had their relatives in the same place as my nani. I went to buy some things they asked us to buy and once I had them I gave them to the nurse. I had to go home because I had not bathed because of all the movement that had happened so early. When I arrived I told the lit
“I said no! Have you gone crazy? I'm not going to abandon my nani just because I look a little tired."“You have to convince her," she looked at the little girl, "maybe she will listen to you."“Come, Lucia, we have to talk," she took me by the arm and took me aside, "listen, my girl, you need to rest. You look too exhausted, and you can't go on like this because you could get sick. You know well that it's not convenient at this time."“But my nani has to have a relative present. We can't leave her alone with that nurse."In the end, the doctor said that it was necessary that a family member be present even if the nurse was there. Lina decided to stay with the condition that tomorrow I would have to stay all day even though the lady they had hired was going to arrive.“Very well, I will stay without any problem. But for today, you will stay."The chaparrita and Lina came in to see my nani. After the visit was done, I went to the house accompanied by my dear aunt. I was in my corner wh
“Carlos, I need you to come back,” I told him, omitting the truth because he was on the road, already working, and just today he went to his job. If I told him this, another tragedy would probably happen. “Please, it's urgent."“Lina already told me what happened. I'm on my way, so stop bothering me.”I hung up as it was neither the time nor the place to argue with Carlos. After a few minutes, they called me to come in to see my nani. I followed all the protocols they demanded and went to see her. I wanted to cry; maybe the pain would lessen, but honestly, no matter how many tears I had shed, I didn't feel any better.“Nani, don't do this to me. You are not dead; you are just asleep. Come on, open your eyes,” I tried to help her, but there was no answer from her, and I could only see that the brightness she had before was gone. “Lady bandit, come on, wake up. Don't do this to me, please. What am I going to do without you? Are you going to leave me alone in such a big house? I'm going
“Come here,” Lina grabbed me roughly by the arm. “We need to talk.”She took me to her room. I didn't like this place, so I tried to leave, but I was stopped by my hair, and Lina pulled me back.“Are you done doing your show yet? People are coming, and you have to attend to them because I'm not going to do it. I'm going to sit down to receive the condolences I'm going to get for my mom's death.”“Aren't you afraid of biting your tongue and killing yourself with your own poison?” she tried to slap me, but I stopped her. “I'm fed up with all your hypocrisy. We both know very well that my nani's death doesn't hurt you at all, and I could swear that you are even happy about it.”“Your father not only left me because of you but also because of my mom. She refused to give him food because he supposedly didn't work.”“Really, your cynicism surprises me more and more. You don't deserve the mother you had, and I don't mean that in a positive way.”I left the room and went to attend to the peop
