Adriana’s heart was pounding wildly in her chest as she felt the elevator's emergency brakes intermittently engaging and disengaging, as if a giant child were playing with it or as if the elevator was about to break free and plunge down.

She couldn’t even begin to describe the fear she felt, or the despair that took hold of her as she realized that if the elevator fell more than thirty floors, the impact would surely kill her.

“Please, answer…! Answer!” she sobbed desperately, while a new jolt slammed her against the glass wall, and she felt the warmth of blood trickling down her forehead.

Her phone slipped from her hands, hitting the floor, and she curled up over it, trying to redial.

“Please, answer…!” she cried, terrified, but no matter how many times she called, each attempt disconnected after a few seconds.

Shaking, panicked, and heartbroken, Adriana dialed 911, the city’s emergency line, praying that the elevator would hold out lon
